Toronto police have arrested one man and are looking for a second after vehicles parked in a residential driveway in Scarborough were set on fire last month.
Officers responded to a report of a fire in the area of Bellamy Road North and Lawrence Avenue East at about 1:21 a.m. ET on Thursday, August 27. Police allege an unknown suspect approached several vehicles parked in the driveway of a residence, poured an accelerant on them, and ignited it on two of the vehicles, causing them to catch fire. A third vehicle was damaged as a result. The suspect then fled the area in a vehicle.
On Sunday, August 30, Roshvin Crofton, 24, was arrested and charged with arson causing damage to property, mischief over $5,000, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, possession of incendiary material, and failing to comply with a probation order. He is scheduled to appear at the Toronto Regional Bail Centre on September 8. None of the allegations has been proven in court.
Investigators with 43 Division have released images of the accused and of a seized suspect vehicle, and say they are still working to identify a second suspect believed to have been involved.
Police are also asking for information about the whereabouts of a black 2025 Hyundai Sonata between August 23 and the fire on August 27.
Several news outlets, including CBC News and CP24, have reported that the vehicles were at the home of Liberal MP Salma Zahid. The Toronto Police Service news release does not identify the owner of the property or the vehicles, and TDot News has not independently confirmed that detail.
