Halton Regional Police will step up enforcement in school zones across the region starting next week, as students return to class.
The service is launching Project Safe Start 2026, the 19th year of its annual back-to-school campaign, with a media event alongside Chief of Police Stephen Tanner on Tuesday, September 8 at 10 a.m. ET outside West Oak Public School, 2071 Fourth Line in Oakville.
The campaign reminds drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to make safety a priority around schools, and involves increased enforcement in school zones across Halton Region.
The numbers from last year give a sense of the scale. Between September 2 and 12, 2025, officers laid a combined 2,252 charges and issued 637 warnings across the region. The most common offences were disobeying a stop sign, speeding, and failing to surrender an insurance card.
That works out to more than 200 charges a day over the ten-day window.
