The Ontario Science Centre has laid off 30 employees, including its entire science department, as part of a restructuring the organization’s leadership announced to staff Wednesday.
The Canadian Press reports that science centre CEO Paul Kortenaar told employees at a meeting Wednesday that the organization is being restructured, eliminating the live exhibits and science department, the business development department, and security. Kortenaar said he expects new roles to open up down the road.
The province abruptly closed the science centre’s east Toronto building in the summer of 2024, citing an engineering report that found deficiencies in the roof. Critics have since questioned that rationale, noting the roof has held up through record snowfall and rainfall over the past two years.
The Ontario government is currently building a new $1-billion science centre at Ontario Place on Toronto’s waterfront to replace the shuttered Don Mills facility.
