A takeout counter on Toronto’s central waterfront has been ordered closed after a food safety inspection, and a Danforth bagel shop was found operating without a licence available for inspection.
Alexandro’s Take Out at 5 Queens Quay W was closed following an inspection on September 2. Toronto Public Health recorded four infractions. Two are ranked crucial: failing to process food in a manner that makes it safe to eat, under section 26(2), and maintaining a food premises in a manner adversely affecting its sanitary operation, under section 7(1)(a)(ii). Two more are ranked significant, both relating to pest control — failing to protect against the breeding of pests and failing to protect against the harbouring of pests, both under section 13(1).
Toronto Public Health issues a closure notice when it orders a premises to stop operating, and a conditional pass when significant infractions are found and a follow-up inspection is required.
Six premises received conditional passes on inspections dated September 4, the most recent in the city’s data. The largest cluster was at Bagel Time, 584 Danforth Ave, with twelve infraction records. Two are crucial: failing to protect food from contamination or adulteration, under section 26(1), and failing to hold potentially hazardous foods at an internal temperature between 4C and 60C, under section 27(1). The inspector also recorded that no licence was available at the time of inspection and made a referral to Municipal Licensing and Standards. Other findings included a lack of hot and cold running water at the utensil washing area and use of a handwashing station for something other than handwashing.
The other five: KREAM at 526 Yonge St, where a chlorine sanitizing solution was recorded below 100 parts per million available chlorine; Monkey Thai Sushi at 494 Queen St W, for failing to protect against the harbouring of pests and handwashing stations without adequate hot and cold water; Sushi Zuki at 2030 Eglinton Ave W, for handwashing stations not conveniently accessible and not stocked with liquid soap and paper towels; Rahat Bakery at 69 Lebovic Ave, for a handwashing supply failure and for failing to ensure a food handler or supervisor was present during all hours of operation; and Weston Gardens at 303 Queens Dr, a minor infraction for racks not of readily cleanable design.
