York Regional Police are stationing a mobile command post at three Vaughan and Thornhill locations through the Jewish High Holidays, alongside increased patrols near synagogues, faith-based institutions and community centres across the region.
The deployment runs from September 11 to October 10, rotating between the JCC Vaughan Jewish Community Centre at 9600 Bathurst Street in Maple, the Garnet A. Williams Community Centre at 501 Clark Avenue West in Vaughan, and Promenade Mall at 1 Promenade Circle in Thornhill. The command post is staffed from noon to 10 p.m.
Officers at the post are available to answer questions, take reports and hear residents’ concerns. Police say the aim is to deter hate-motivated activity during the observance period, and are asking anyone who experiences or witnesses a hate crime or bias incident to report it rather than let it pass.
“Hate, bigotry and violence have no place in York Region,” the service said.
