Norway held a state funeral for King Harald V on Wednesday at Oslo Cathedral, followed by burial at Akershus Fortress. Harald died on August 28 at age 89 at Oslo University Hospital’s Rikshospitalet; his son immediately became King Haakon VIII.
A nationwide minute of silence was observed at 1 p.m. local time, marked by church bells across the country, according to the Norwegian government’s official mourning-period guidance. An estimated 10,000 people lined Oslo’s streets the day Harald died, as his coffin was moved to the Royal Palace.
International dignitaries attended the funeral, including Britain’s Prince William.
