A watermain break at Coxwell Avenue and Fairford Avenue, near Gerrard Street East in Toronto’s east end, was reported around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. The break mixed gas and diesel fuel into the running water; police assessed the ignition risk as low, and no injuries were reported.
The TTC replaced its 506 Carlton streetcar with shuttle buses between Main Street Station and Coxwell Avenue at Lower Gerrard Street East, and eastbound road traffic in the area was reduced to one lane. No timeline has been confirmed for when repairs will be complete.
A City of Toronto spokesperson said emergency crews are on-site “working to isolate the break, assess the damage, and complete repairs as quickly and safely as possible.”
