Ottawa is putting $52,000 into two Brantford-area events this month, one of them a public Truth and Reconciliation commemoration on September 26.
Brantford Native Housing gets $37,000 for its fifth annual Truth and Reconciliation Commemoration — $30,000 through the Multiculturalism and Anti-Racism Program and $7,000 through the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation component of the Commemorate Canada program. The September 26 event is built around cultural performances and teachings, reflections from Survivors and intergenerational Survivors, traditional foods, interactive activities and community resources.
Darmont GivesBack gets $15,000 for Intergenerational Conversations on Race, Identity & Belonging, a one-day event bringing together people from different generations and communities.
The announcement was made in Brantford by Lisa Hepfner, MP for Hamilton Mountain, on behalf of Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture.
“Every single life carries a unique melody, found in our ceremonies, the wisdom of our Elders, and the fierce hope of our children,” said Alma Arguello, executive director of Brantford Native Housing. “True reconciliation means listening to those melodies, taking the TRC roadmap off the page, and knowing when to step back so Indigenous voices can lead the way.”
Tobi Adedayo, executive director of Darmont GivesBack, said the money lets the organisation “bring together youth, elders, newcomers, and long-term residents across the County of Brant in authentic conversation about the lived realities of racism and discrimination.”
Brantford Native Housing is an Indigenous-led organisation that provides housing and culturally grounded programs for urban Indigenous people. Darmont GivesBack is a not-for-profit working on education, health and equal opportunity.
The release does not give a time or venue for either event. Both organisations publish their own event details.
