Health Canada has recalled two traditional kohl eye cosmetics sold at a Mississauga store because they contain lead above the limits allowed in Canada.
The recall names Mumtaz brand “Herbal Kajal With Almond Oil for Sensitive Eyes” and Al-Asmad brand “Alharmain Zam Zam & Rose Water”. The products originate from India and the United Arab Emirates.
According to the recall notice, 576 units of each product were sold in Canada between January 2026 and August 2026. They were sold by Sara Islamic Store in Mississauga. As of August 28, 2026, the company had received no reports of incident or injury in Canada.
Kohl and kajal are applied directly to the eyelid and waterline, including on children in many South Asian, Middle Eastern and North and East African traditions. That is what makes a lead content finding significant: the product is placed on thin skin next to the eye and is easily transferred to the hands and mouth.
Health Canada advises consumers to stop using recalled products and to check the notice for the full product identifiers before use.
